Eaton County Jail
The Eaton County Jail is located in Charlotte, Michigan. It has a long history dating back to 1847, when the first jail was officially built. Prior to 1847, overnight prisoners were held in a hole near the courthouse. Around 1871, the existing jail was condemned, and by 1873, the county built a new jail facility. Between 1873 and 1961, the jail underwent numerous renovations and extensions. In 1961, a two-story brick, concrete and steel building was constructed. It had the capacity to house 61 inmates, on the east side of the 1873 jail. In 1990, a 225-inmate facility was built, which in 2006 was extended to accommodate 374 inmates.
Eaton County Jail has two programs - Inmate Educational Unit (IEU) and Work Release Program that encourage inmates to become productive citizens on their release. The IEU allows inmates to study for Adult Basic Education, GED Test Preparation, and High School Completion. The Work Release program, where the inmate is allowed to leave the facility, report to work, and return to the jail after work hours, through the course of their sentence.
Eaton County Jail inmates encourage visits from family and friends. Each inmate is allowed a 30-minute visit with up to three visitors, every week. Family and friends can also communicate with inmates through postcards. Visit the jail website for more information.
