St. Mary's County Detention Center is located in Leonardtown, Maryland. This detention center has a long history and is one of the first sheriff's offices to be established in the United States. The history can be traced back to 1637, and the ‘old jail' or the first building was constructed in 1856. This building was also one of the oldest detention centers. The new and present detention facility was built in 1945, as an addition to the old jail and is used to this day. The St. Mary's County Historical Society's offices are now housed in the Old jail.
