The Garrett County Detention Center is located on East Alder Street in Oakland, Maryland. Established in 1978, the facility was initially built to house about 22 prisoners. With the progress of time, it has been expanded to accommodate up to 64 inmates. Being the only detention center and correctional facility in the County, it is equipped to house both sentenced convicts and those awaiting trial. It also has adequate facilities to detain 8 female and 4 juvenile convicts. The facility, though, is equipped to keep prisoners sentenced to not more than 18 months, that is, only for minor offenses.
The detention center is currently headed by Major Terry Schlossnagle. To support the physical and mental welfare of its inmates during their period of incarceration, the facility runs a number of inmate programs. These include programs addressing substance and alcohol abuse, mental health counseling work release programs, and educational courses, among others. Facilities for recreation, library and legal services, medical services, religious services, commissary services enabling prisoners to purchase certain items for use in prison, and other such services are also provided.
As is standard in most prisons, inmates can make calls to friends and family either through prepaid or collect call facilities. Money deposits to inmates are capped at a fixed amount per week. Visitations and obtaining information about the inmates and are allowed within the regulations of the state laws.
