About Calvert County Jail
Calvert County Jail is located in Barstow, Maryland. The jail has a very long history
that dates back to 1654. Until the 1950s, the facility was located in a building behind
the courthouse. Due to problems of overcrowding and the age of the building, a new
jail was built and opened in 1978.
Overcrowding again became a problem over time, and in 1990, it was decided to build
a new maximum security facility by renovating the existing building. The renovation
was completed in 1992 and the prison currently has a capacity of housing 172
inmates. It was during this time that the prison was named Calvert County Detention
The jail has an extensive visiting schedule for different blocks. It has mainly three
work release programs which are Community Release Program, Live In/Work Out
Program, and Work Release II program, the details of which are given on its site.
For money deposits, only money orders are accepted. The name of the inmate is to
be written correctly, and also the name, address and phone number of the sender. No
check or cash is accepted through mails. There is a kiosk in the lobby of the facility
through which money can be deposited in the inmate's account. There is also Inmate
Banker facility for deposits.
