The Jefferson County Jail in Golden, Colorado initially opened in 1986. As the population grew an expansion was deemed necessary by the county and a new jail expansion opened in 2000. After the expansion the jail had an average daily population of 768 inmates per day. However, by 2005 the average daily population had almost doubled to 1,470 inmates. The population still remains at near or slightly above maximum capacity today. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is responsible of all aspects of the jail including housing, booking, inmate classification, security, transportation and medical services. The mission statement of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is to respond to community needs, maintain a safe and secure facility and provide programs for inmate stability and education.
