About Denver County Jail
The Denver County Jail in Denver, Colorado first opened its doors in 1956. It has since been expanded several times to accommodate a growing Denver population. It is now the largest single county jail in Colorado with the capacity to hold 1,778 inmates, and a daily population that is often higher than that. The Denver Sheriff's Department is responsible for the custody, care and transport of inmates incarcerated in the county. The Denver County Jail functions as a long term prison and a holding cell for convicted felons waiting to be transferred to the Colorado Department of Corrections. The Denver County Jail Division is overseen by Division Chief Elias Diggins.

The Denver County Jail offers a variety of programs that are focused on enhancing the lives of prisoners during their incarceration. This includes programs like G.E.D. assistance, drug abuse therapy, domestic violence therapy, vocation testing and training, career counseling and religious counseling. Prisoners also have access to 24 hour health care, which is under the supervision of the Denver Medical Health Center. All visits to long term or short term housing require a reservation. There are no contact visits allowed at the facility and all visitation will be through a video system. Visiting hours are available every day of the week with times that vary depending on the housing unit.
